Nikki Vered – Head Coach/Program Director
Coach Nikki has been Marblehead Youth Badminton’s Head Coach and Program Director since 2009. Nikki is a certified USA Badminton Level 2 High Performance Coach. This qualifies Nikki to coach internationally in tournaments such as the Pan Am Junior Championships and World Junior Championships.
Nikki has been playing competitive badminton for about 20 years. He was first taught by his uncle in the backyard and soon after started to play in local clubs around Connecticut. As Nikki’s play continued to improve he competed in local junior tournaments and quickly progressed to the regional and national level. He ended up making the junior national team and eventually the adult national team in 2000. Nikki became a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center based in Colorado Springs where he first met Olympian Bob Malaythong. He trained in Colorado for about a year and transferred to the Olympic Training Center based in Lake Placid a year later, where he roomed with Raju Rai. At his peak Nikki was ranked as high as top 10 in the nation in both Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles training with the likes of Chibing Wu, Andy Chong, Ardy Wiranata, and Zhou Jincan. Nikki joined MYB in the winter of 2008 as Assistant Coach under Bob Malaythong.
Nikki coached the Pan Am Junior Championships in 2012 & 2013. “Traveling to Edmonton, CA and Puerto Vallarta were tremendous opportunities for me. Gaining the international experience from both tournaments has taught me an incredible amount about our US players and the other countries involved. It’s interesting to see the different levels of each country and compare them to the USA team and our MYB players. I also loved the chance to work with some of the top coaches in the USA and learned many things about coaching from each of them. I look forward to jump on more opportunities that will help propel my coaching career to the next level.”
